How to Create your Own Phishing Template

The guide explains how to create a custom phishing email template by accessing the Template Library, naming and selecting the email type, adding and formatting text with dynamic fields and clickable learning moment links, customizing email details like subject and sender information, optionally tagging the template for campaign use, saving it to the dashboard, and sending a preview email.

Creating a Custom Phishing Template

If you have an idea for a phishing template that is not part of the existing template library, you can create your own by following these steps:

1. Access the Template Library

  • Navigate to the 'Template Library' from the left-hand navigation menu under 'Phishing'.
  • Here, you can view any templates you have already created, as well as all of Phin's default templates.

2. Create a New Template

  • Click on 'Create a New Template'.
  • Enter a name for your template.
  • Select 'Email' as the template type.

3. Add and Format Content

  • Add text by dragging and dropping a text box from the right-hand menu.
  • Format your text and break it into sections as needed.

Adding Clickable Links

  • To add a clickable link that leads to a learning moment, insert the following phrase where you want the link to appear:

    {{action_url}}

  • This tells the system to insert a learning moment link at that location.

  • If you want the link to go somewhere else, use the blue 'Learning Moment' button to choose a video or custom URL.

Using Dynamic Fields

  • You can embed dynamic fields using double brackets, such as {{Name}}.
  • This allows you to map the field to a user's additional information (e.g., name, department).
  • Under 'Injected Fields', you can see which fields are available to map.
  • Some fields allow you to set alternative values if the mapped field is blank. Enter your desired word or phrase for these alternates.

4. Customize Email Details

  • Edit fields such as email subject, display name, sending name, and sending domain as needed.

5. Tag the Template

  • Optionally, tag your template. This is useful for continuous campaigns, as it allows the template to be included in category cycles.

6. Save the Template

  • Click 'Save'. Your template will now appear in the template dashboard.

7. Send a Preview Email

  • To preview your template as an email:
    • Go to the Phishing Dashboard from the left-hand navigation menu.
    • Select "Launch a Phishing Campaign" (you can discard this campaign after testing).
    • Fill in the campaign name and description (e.g., "test").
    • Select 'Fixed Length'.
    • Choose your newly created template by clicking the blue "+" sign (it will turn into a green check mark).
    • Scroll to the bottom and under "Publish Options" select "Run a Preview".
    • Enter the email address to receive the preview.
    • Click "Run Preview". The preview email should be sent immediately and will show how the template appears to end users.

In the preview, any {{action_url}} in your template will be converted into a clickable link.
